As the cover shows, we are all gathered here today to witness one Kitty Pryde and one Colossus enter the bonds of holy matrimony. Don’t throw rice because that’s considered bad. Blow bubbles. And maybe shoot your mutant powers in the air and wave them around like you just don’t care.

Marc Guggenheim’s Mesmero saga started out pretty strong a few issues ago but I felt the title took a pretty big nosedive quickly with a silly plot where the X-Men are thrown in prison. That prison stay lasted all of eight seconds and now the X-Men Gold team are back out and about trying to take down Mesmero for good. Not that I didn’t want to see an end to this Mesmero storyline, but as the cover shows Colossus and Kitty hand-in-hand saying, “WILL YOU MARRY ME?” I thought we were going to get a more laid back issue with some actual humanity.

I guess that’s what I get when I assume. Kitty, Rogue, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Gambit, and Prestige are all out in force ready to take down the evil baddie with the hypnotism powers. For all of the trouble that Mesmero has been over the last couple issues, I was quite surprised how quickly everything wraps up into a nice little bow. The final conflict almost seems like an afterthought. “Oh yeah, I guess we started this whole Mesmero thing, I guess we should do something with the guy in the end.”  So basically it is find Mesmero, land a few punches, and call it a day.  Sorry if that’s a spoiler but the end fight between Mesmero and the team is a massive letdown.

After the Mesmero nonsense is taken care of we actually do get a look into the personal lives of the X-Men and how the upcoming wedding planning is affecting Kitty, Colossus, and the rest of the team. The guys? They are all about the bachelor party (I mean, who wouldn’t be?!?). Kitty goes back home and talks with her mom in a sequence that only lasts one page but is the best damn page of the entire issue.  It’s warm, it’s sweet, and I wish more of the issue was like this.

So there’s no wedding? Nope. No wedding. So when is it? Where is it? What issue is this whole thing going to happen? I have no clue. Maybe if you read the solicits you have a better idea of what’s to come than I do, but there is no real indication from the actual book if the wedding is next issue or ten issues away. I will say that the second half of this issue really picked up and helped redeem the last few horrid issues. Are we past the dark times or is there more silly plots to come? I’m not quite sure. But I am looking forward to a X-Men wedding. Let’s hope it gets here sooner rather than later.
