Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #41 wraps up the Zod’s Will storyline which slightly makes me sad and slightly makes me happy. Why both? Zod is such a menacing force to reckon with and taking on the entire Green Lantern force that showed up on his planet Zearth (not the actual name…but I’m thinking DC will change it to Zearth some day) was just fantastic. But he’s a big, badass baddie who is as strong as Superman but with twice the cunning.  How long can a fight with him actually last?

Does that mean the final fight between Hal Jordan and Zod is one-sided? Not at all. The fight between Hal and Zod takes up a majority of the issue and it does not disappoint. This is where Brandon Peterson and Tomeu Morey really get to shine. The entire battle sequence is gorgeous and moves from panel to panel so smoothly. I almost didn’t want the fight to end. They could have made this book 50 pages and just had 25 more pages of the duo duking it out. I would have shelled out a few more bucks for that.

Ultimately, as this is the end of the arc, there has to be some sort of resolution. Do the Green Lanterns take Zod down? Is Zod triumphant and forces the GL’s to run with their tails between their legs? If you’ve been reading the series for the past couple issues you might figure out how this one was going to end. Sometimes life isn’t fair – even for superpowered space cops.  I had a feeling of what was going to happen from the events of two issues ago and I was correct in what I thought.  It’s a bummer but it makes sense in the grander sense of things.

I’m not sure what else I can say about Robert Venditti. The guy is easily one of my favorite writers and he murders any book he is on. This book is such a one-two punch with the equally great Green Lanterns comic, but Venditti really is able to hammer down the cockiness and determination of Hal Jordan. It’s almost like he was born to write this character.

Very easy to give this book high marks. It is well deserved and nearly all of the creative team should take a bow on getting this story out every two weeks. It really has been a highlight of every other New Comic Book Day.
