Fighting an old friend is the plot of Wonder Woman #39 as Diana’s friend Vanessa has been transformed into a new and deadly villain. Vanessa has become the Silver Swan and she wants nothing else but to take down Wonder Woman. WW is stunned. What has happened to her friend? Is she evil? What caused this transformation?

Silver Swan does not give Wonder Woman a chance. With her metallic razor sharp wings she launches attack after attack. Wonder Woman? She doesn’t want to fight back. She doesn’t want to hurt her friend. Unfortunately she may not have a choice.

The comic briefly turns to the Amazon Jungle where Darkseid and his minions have holed up in an ancient temple. Darkseid is putting a plan in motion but there are some more items he needs before he can enact his diabolical plan to probably rule the world or something. I’ll give it to Darkseid though, it seems that has actually has a bit of patience.

I’m not familiar with the Vanessa character nor Wonder Woman’s brother Jason, who also pops up in this issue. Jason seems to have some cool powers which is cool as hee comes to his sister’s aide. I liked Silver Swan and her battle readiness. She gave Wonder Woman a pretty good fight. The only thing I didn’t like?  The name. The Silver Swan? Surely a badass like Silver Swan could have come up with something that could have made her sound a bit more menacing.  When I think Silver Swan I think of feeding some geese by a quiet lake.

I thought Wonder Woman #9 was a pretty good read overall. I thought James Robinson’s script was pretty fantastic and kept me entertained. I did feel a stiffness in the characters from artists Emanuela Lupacchino and Carmen Carnero.  Robinson wrote a ton of action in this issue and it didn’t always come off fluid to me.  Ultimately this is very minor as it doesn’t occur on every single page, but it was noticeable at times.

The best part of jumping on the title with this issue is Darkseid. I’m loving his look these days and they gave him enough exposition that we know he’s coming up something sinister. I can’t wait to see what that may be.
